38 year old gran fondo/sportive rider with a passion for the mountains.
Having previously been a typical overweight, sedentary and unhealthy male finding cycling in
late 2012 has proved to be a positive turning point in my life by gaining control of my health
After completing Lands end to John O’groats (2013) I went on to another multi-day ride from
Spain-Essex UK in 8 days (2015) as well as multiple sportives around the country. In 2016 I
discovered my love for the mountains with camps in Mallorca and La Marmotte gran fondo
Alps soon followed (2016) The following year took me to Italy for the incredible Maratona
Dles Dolomites and 2018 will prove to be my biggest challenge yet with the Mallorca 312,
Maratona (so good it has to be done twice!) and the 7 day Haute Route Pyrenees all set to
test my legs in the coming months.
After completing the initial lejog ride in 2013 I became increasingly fed up with the sugary
foods and gels that are typically marketed at cyclists. Keen to continue with my weight loss
journey I knew this wasn't a good approach but I wanted to keep riding and would need fuel
of some kind. I began to research diet again (a previous passion from my early 20’s tested a
few things and all roads eventually led to what has become a low carb way of life and
becoming fat adapted in the process. This means that my training rides are mostly fuelled
from my stored body fat with no need for excess junk.
This is where UCAN comes in, as a slow release carb source it keeps my glycogen topped
up without inhibiting my bodies ability to burn fat, therefore allowing me to go longer and
harder on far less calories. Another great benefit is just how level and stable I feel when
using it, there are no crashes….say goodbye to the bonk!
During my longest and toughest days in the mountains I wouldn’t be without my superstarch. Along with some other complementary good choices Generation UCAN superstarch will be my main source of fuel during my big rides this year again.
